We are proud to report that InVision Founder & President, Ruth Siegfried, along with self-advocates and their families, met personally with Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. The governor listened and engaged intently as they talked about the impact of the current crisis effecting people with intellectual disability and autism, their families, and the staff who support them. They made a compelling argument for raising wages for the Direct Support Professionals to provide needed services. We are grateful for Governor Shapiro’s time and attention, and for considering real solutions to ensuring that people with the most complex disabilities are not left behind.
In a communication to InVision team members, Ruth stated, “I was privileged on Monday to take a family as well as other ID/A advocates with me to meet privately with Governor Shapiro. The family is still waiting for services, and we sent a strong message about the impact of the DSP crisis on so many families and their loved ones with ID/A. Governor Shapiro spent not just the 10 minutes allotted to our meeting, but a full hour. Take a moment to celebrate the visibility we achieved this week by meeting personally with the governor. This may well be the first time in 40 years that such a meeting has occurred. And it may be the beginning of more success than we have had in decades.”
