Humility: We are part of something bigger than ourselves and do not do this work seeking glory. Our success is the result of the efforts of many, working together towards a common goal.
I was never a good student, never felt I had the correct answer and felt nervous speaking up in front of the class. I always felt embarrassed when called on during class.
When I was in college I had to take a public speaking class. The professor decided our first speech would be about sharing a moment in history we could relate to, and our grade was a class grade, not an individual grade. Of course, my mind went blank, no ideas, thinking to myself I don’t belong here, and I will not be responsible for other people failing this class.
The professor helped me identify a topic I could relate to, and I felt confident about it. I was able to then start preparing my speech. During my speech, I cried, blew my nose, lost my train of thought, and somehow finished. At the end all I could hear was my heart. Then one of my classmates stood up and said, “If she can get through that then I can too, leave the tissue box up there.” The rest of the class stood up and clapped. I was then reminded; we are in this together. I happily sat there to listen, watch, and provide the same support to everyone as they did to me.
The professor approached each of us afterwards to provide feedback. I thanked my professor for helping me find a way to accomplish this assignment and not let the class down. At the end of that class, we were asked to write down things we learned about ourselves. Mine were: it is expected to ask for help so you have the details you need to be successful; you never accomplish things without others’ help, guidance, or input; my actions can positively impact others; there is always more to learn.
After college I found my career passion – helping others find success within their careers, ironically as a corporate trainer! Fast forward through my career within Learning and Development. Here at InVision, we have several iterations of teams because not one person can fulfill our mission alone. We all have our strengths and weaknesses which is why everyone has a valuable role. What I learned in that college class still applies today. We are in this together. If we allow ourselves a bit of grace by reducing our fears and egos and trust each other a little more, then we will succeed and face challenges as a team. Our guiding principle: We Act with Humility is the thread that brings us to life as a company. To act with humility is to celebrate success, strive to be better, be accountable, open and honest, put people first, treat others with respect and kindness, and embrace change.
“Being humble means recognizing that we are not on earth to see how important we can become, but to see how much difference we can make in the lives of others.” – Gordon B. Hinckley
